During the entire month of September, The Mommy Mentor radio show will be talking with people that have been exposed to bullying in one way, shape or form.  We will share tips with you on how you can prevent bullying from happening to your child, or a child you know.  We as a community need to step up and take care of those children who need our help.  We will talk to people who have been victims of bullying and have amazing stories of strength and great determination to not let their bullies control their lives, well beyond school.

Our first guest is Stanley Holditch.  Stanley has worked in Internet content management and marketing since 2002 and has been the Internet Marketing Manager for InternetSafety.com since April 2009.  Stanley is a father and is passionate about responsible online parenting and Internet Safety.  In short, Mr. Holditch believes that while the internet certainly poses new challenges to parents and children, both parties must confront the challenges by mutal education, open communication, and using the right tools.

Our second guest is Annie Fox from AnnieFox.com.  She is the creator of Cruel’s Not Cool! a new anti-bullying campaign to engage students, teachers, administrators and parents in a community-wide exploration of our culture of cruelty, why cruel’s not cool, and what each of us can do, moment-by-moment to take back our schools by making them safer, more accepting places for all students all the time.

Our first set of guests will talk with us live on Tuesday,  August 31 at 10am CST.  You will be able to go to Toginet.com to listen live.  If you miss the show, we will be posting and sharing our podcasts with you once they are made available.  You can also visit iTunes and download our free podcasts at any time!

Girls and Boys, stay safe with ISafe!

School has started, and the weather is nice, so why not walk to and from home or your dorm, right?  Or if you live in the midwest such as I do, our nights are getting darker sooner and pretty soon, by 5PM it will be complete darkness.  Perhaps you have a little anxiety about walking home from places by yourself, or you travel alot and go from airport to hotel frequently.  If you find yourself alone and wishing you had some kind of security blanket to take with you on your travels or walks to and from, then I highly recommend that you run, don’t walk, to get your ISafe messenger bag, tote bag, or backpack.

I was recently sent the pink floral messenger bag to test out and share some thoughts.  I wasn’t paid anything for my thoughts other than receipt of the bag (which retails for $59.99) .  All the thoughts are mine and mine alone, well, with a little input from my own girls (ages 6 & 12).

We opened the box and were pleasantly surprised at the design and color.  My oldest would prefer the black fabric with the little white hearts on it that is on the inside of the bag, lol, but other than that she thought the bag was a very “cool” idea.  The bag has many little compartments and is large enough to carry a small laptop.  I explained to my daughter the concept behind the invented bag and she thought it was a great idea…if it worked.  Well, with that comment, we had to give the ISafe bag the ultimate test.  On the count of three, I pulled the cord.  The cord is tucked away under a little velcro flap.  It is easy to get to, easy to pull, and easy to turn off.  What pulling the cord does is it activates a loud siren (about 120 dB) that is much louder, I think than that of a car alarm.  It actually scared me and I was the one pulling the cord.  I think it was because I really didn’t know what to expect when I pulled it.  I knew it was a siren, but I didn’t know it was really that loud…but it was!  The bag even has a strobe light so that if you are in the dark, the light will go off along with the siren, which will definitely draw attention to you and the area you are in.  (I even scared the dog!)  After we put the pin back into the slot, the siren went off immediately and the lights stopped blinking.  After it stopped, my youngest wanted to pull it again to show it off to her brother and dad.  I told her no, that it was not a toy and should never be pulled unless there was an emergency.  With her being 6 now, we are teaching her the importance of safety and what to do in the event that she is approached by a stranger, so having a product like this right now has been very helpful in showing her the difference between a threatening and non-threatening encounter.

It left me speechless and it was one of those moments where I wondered why a product like this hasn’t been thought of before.  I think of how many girls and boys it could have saved in years past.  Now it leaves me thankful that a product like this is out there to protect my children and yours.  It is even a great bag to have if your child is being bullied at school!  In September we will be discussing bullying and how to prevent it from happening, signs and symptoms of bullying and you better believe I will be sharing this product information with my listeners.   Even though the cost of the bag is much more than what I would normally spend on a backpack, or messenger bag, you really cannot put a price tag on your child’s safety.

I say, this product is a must-have for any parent to get for their child,  boy OR girl.  They come in a variety of styles and sizes, for children and adults.  I encourage you to check it out for yourself by visiting www.isafebags.com.  I know that I will sleep well at night knowing that the next day, I will be sending  my child off to school with her own personal bodyguard!

AG Front Cover

The novel recounts a young woman’s coming of age, with a little bit of sassiness and a lot of heart. Jam-packed with drama & emotional conflict, growing pains and trials & tribulations, romance and humor, the book follows outspoken, materialistic 17-year-old Victoria Benson on her rocky road to adulthood as she struggles with financial setbacks, bullying, first love, idealism, loss and forgiveness along the way.
Everyone thinks Vicky has an attitude problem…but in her eyes, she’s simply being realistic and honest about what she thinks and feels. If people can’t handle it, well… it’s their problem.

MilaIn her award-winning debut novel, The Attitude Girl, Mila Bernadkin draws on her experience as a teacher, mother and advanced graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature to identify with the tremulous world of confusing emotions and mixed messages of “maturity” today’s teens live in as they feel their way through the process of becoming young adults. In 2008, Bernadkin’s manuscript for The Attitude Girl became a First-place Winner in the Arizona Authors Association Annual Literary Awards Contest. That win resulted in a publishing contract with Five Star Publications, Inc., and the book was published in June 2009. Later, Mila Bernadkin was named a First-place Winner for the novel in the Teenage/Young Adult category at the 2009 London Book Festival and received more recognition in 2009 and 2010.  You can learn more about The Attitude Girl and Mila Bernadkin by visiting www.AttitudeGirlBook.com
